Begg's Retainer
Begg's retainer, a custom made apppliance, provides post-treatment stabilisation and reduces the risk of relapse. Like its Hawley counterpart, it incorporates an acrylic baseplate, but its wire configuration may be tailored for the distinct occlusal and anterior characteristics often seen with Begg-treated cases. Recognising the nuances of this design allows for optimal adjustments and patient-specific customisation.
As with all removable orthodontic retainers, periodic assessments ensure retention efficacy and address potential wear or adaptation issues. This retainer must be worn continuously after a patient has had braces removed to prevent teeth from shifting back out of alignment.
The crossover wire usually passes distal to the distal most teeth. Therefore chances of space opening up is less as compared to Hawley's retainers.
